Stop the Water Before It Ruins Your Floors

There are few things more panic-inducing than watching the water level in your toilet bowl rise dangerously close to the rim and then spill over onto your bathroom floor. An overflowing toilet is a severe biological hazard that requires immediate action to prevent contaminated water from soaking into your baseboards, drywall, and flooring.

Step 1: Shut Off the Toilet's Water Valve

Do not wait for the water to stop on its own. Immediately reach behind the base of the toilet near the wall. You will see a small silver valve connected to a flexible hose. Turn this valve clockwise (to the right) as tightly as you can. This cuts off the water supply to the toilet tank and stops the bowl from filling further.

Step 2: Secure the Flapper (If the Valve is Stuck)

If the shut-off valve is rusted or stuck and you cannot turn it, quickly take the heavy ceramic lid off the toilet tank. Reach into the water inside the tank (this water is clean) and push the rubber flapper down over the hole at the bottom. Then, lift the float arm to stop the fill valve from running.

    Step 3: Plunge the Clog

Once the water is stopped, use a high-quality flange plunger (not a flat cup plunger) to clear the blockage. Ensure the plunger creates a tight seal over the drain hole, and push down forcefully. The suction and pressure should dislodge the clog.

    When the Plunger Doesn't Work

If plunging doesn't clear the blockage, or if multiple drains in your home are backing up simultaneously, you are likely dealing with a main sewer line clog. This is not a DIY fix. You need an emergency plumber near you with professional augers and hydro-jetting equipment. Call Reliance Plumbing Solutions immediately for 24/7 rapid response in Port St. Lucie.
