Imagine waking up at 2 AM to the sound of rushing water. A pipe has ruptured, and water is flooding your hallway. The difference between a minor cleanup and a catastrophic insurance claim comes down to one thing: knowing how to shut off your main water valve quickly.

Where to Look in Port St. Lucie Homes

Unlike homes up north where valves are usually in a basement, Florida homes have specific locations for their main shut-offs:

Exterior Wall: The most common location is on an exterior wall, usually on the side or front of the house, directly below an outdoor hose bib. Look for a pipe coming out of the ground with a lever or round wheel handle.
Inside the Garage: Many modern homes have the main shut-off valve located on an interior wall inside the garage.
At the Street (Water Meter): If you cannot find the valve on your house, you can shut the water off at the city meter near the street. You may need a specialized "water meter key" or a wrench to turn the valve inside the concrete box.

How to Turn It Off

If you have a ball valve (a straight lever handle), turn the lever 90 degrees so it sits perpendicular to the pipe. If you have a gate valve (a round wheel), turn it clockwise (righty-tighty) until it stops completely. Do not force it if it is stuck, as this can break the valve.
