We've all been there: you're plunging your kitchen sink or bathtub with all your might, but the murky water simply refuses to go down. When a standard plunger isn't enough, it means the clog is either too solid (like hardened grease or a massive hairball) or located too deep within your plumbing system.

Method 1: The Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcano

Before reaching for harsh chemical drain cleaners—which can actually melt your PVC pipes and cause severe chemical burns—try a natural approach. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed immediately by half a cup of white vinegar. Plug the drain with a rag to force the fizzing reaction downward into the clog. Wait 15 minutes, then flush with a kettle of boiling water.

Method 2: Clean the P-Trap

If the sink is still clogged, the blockage is likely caught in the curved pipe beneath the sink, known as the P-trap. Place a bucket under the pipe, loosen the slip nuts on either side of the curve, and carefully remove the trap. Empty the nasty sludge into the bucket, scrub the trap clean, and reattach it tightly.

Method 3: Use a Plumbing Snake (Auger)

If the P-trap is clear, the clog is deeper in the wall. You can purchase a manual plumbing snake from a hardware store. Feed the cable down the drain until you feel resistance, then turn the crank to hook and pull the blockage out.
