AC Drain Line Backups: A Hidden Florida Plumbing Emergency

Table of Contents
The Florida Specific Plumbing Emergency
When we think of plumbing emergencies, we usually think of burst pipes or overflowing toilets. But in Port St. Lucie and across Florida, one of the most common causes of indoor water damage is actually tied to your air conditioning system: a clogged AC condensate drain line.
How the AC Drain Works
As your AC cools your home, it pulls humidity out of the air. This moisture collects as condensation and drips into a pan, where it is funneled outside through a small PVC pipe. In the peak of summer, your AC can produce up to 20 gallons of water a day!
Why They Clog
Because the drain line is dark, damp, and constantly wet, it is the perfect breeding ground for algae, mold, and mildew. Over time, this biological growth forms a thick sludge that completely blocks the small PVC pipe.
The Warning Signs
If you notice water pooling around your indoor air handler (often located in a closet or the garage), or if your AC suddenly shuts off and won't turn back on (many modern systems have a float switch that kills the power when the pan overflows), you have a backup.
What to Do
Turn off your AC immediately to stop the production of condensation. While you can try to clear minor clogs with a wet/dry vacuum from the outside pipe, severe blockages require professional tools. An emergency plumber can use specialized equipment to blast the line clear and treat it to prevent future algae growth, saving your drywall and flooring from severe water damage.
