    The Vacation Nightmare

A washing machine hose bursting while you're away for a week can cause catastrophic damage, flooding your home undisturbed for days.

    Shut Off the Main Valve

The single most important thing you can do is shut off your main water valve. This instantly eliminates 99% of the risk of an indoor flood. Once off, open a faucet to drain the remaining pressure from the lines.

    Adjust the Water Heater

Turn your water heater to "Vacation Mode" or lower the temperature to the lowest setting. There is no reason to pay to keep 50 gallons of water piping hot while you're in the Bahamas.

    Check Your Hoses

If you can't turn off the main water (perhaps due to an irrigation system), at least shut off the individual valves behind your washing machine and toilets, as these rubber hoses are highly prone to bursting.
