Hurricane Plumbing Prep for Florida Homeowners

Why Hurricane Plumbing Prep Matters
When a hurricane hits the Treasure Coast, most homeowners focus on boarding up windows and stocking up on water. But your plumbing system is incredibly vulnerable during severe storms. From storm surges backing up into your sewer line to flying debris damaging your exposed pipes, a lack of preparation can lead to catastrophic water damage inside your home—even if your roof holds up.
1. Locate and Test Your Main Water Shutoff Valve
This is the single most important step. If a pipe bursts or a tree uproots and damages your water line, you need to be able to shut off the water to your home immediately. Your main shutoff valve is usually located near your water meter or where the main line enters your house. Test it now to ensure it isn't rusted stuck.
2. Secure Your Water Heater
If your water heater is in the garage, it's at risk if floodwaters rise. If you are in a flood zone, consider having your water heater elevated. Furthermore, if you lose power and water pressure drops, your water heater could overheat if it runs dry. Turn off the power (or gas supply) and the water valve to the heater before the storm hits.
3. Clear Your Drains and Gutters
Heavy rains will test your property's drainage. Ensure your gutters are clean and directing water away from your foundation. Inside the home, make sure your drains are clear. A slow drain will quickly become a fully backed-up drain if the municipal sewer system gets overwhelmed by storm water.
4. Prepare for Sewer Backups
During heavy flooding, municipal sewer systems can become overwhelmed, causing raw sewage to back up into homes through the lowest drains (usually showers or ground-floor toilets). If you live in a low-lying area, consider having a backwater valve installed by a professional plumber. This one-way valve prevents sewage from flowing backward into your home.
After the Storm
If you experience any plumbing issues after a hurricane passes, do not try to fix major damage yourself, especially if there is standing water or electrical hazards. Contact Reliance Plumbing Solutions immediately for emergency plumbing services.
