What You Should NEVER Put Down Your Garbage Disposal

Your Disposal is Not a Trash Can

Garbage disposals are incredibly convenient, but they are not designed to handle everything. Misusing them is the number one cause of kitchen sink backups.

    The Worst Offenders

Never put coffee grounds, eggshells, or fibrous vegetables (like celery or corn husks) down the disposal. These items tangle around the blades or create a thick sludge in your pipes.

    The Grease Problem

Fats, oils, and grease (FOG) are the enemy of your plumbing. They may go down as a liquid, but they solidify in your pipes, trapping other food particles and causing massive blockages.

    Proper Maintenance

To keep your disposal fresh and sharp, grind up some ice cubes and citrus peels once a month, and always run cold water for 15 seconds after turning the unit off.
